Editor's Note:
The few friends I mentioned this project to during research and construction said things like: "Wow, you're such a wonderful guy to do something like this."
My feeling is: I'm not such a wonderful guy because I've made just about every mistake a person can make during the process of getting here now.
But, I've also done a few things right, and those things seem to revolve around helping others.
So, if you're in doubt about yourself, or the world around you I challenge you to do something to make yourself and the world around you better by volunteering to do something that is extraordinary.

A bit of advice...
It's usually better to do your volunteer work with an organization rather than flying solo. The learning curve is much steeper and they have a lot more resources than the average person. For example large helping organizations have referral lists to meet the needs of just about everyone, whatever challenges they may face.
Also, working with a large organization can help protect the volunteer. Sad to say, there are people who will take advantage of volunteers. They usually have more resources than they let you know about while using your time and energy. Simply put, a large helping organization is better able to target sincere people with real needs. Sure, insincere people need help too, but they can usually afford to get it in the commercial market place rather than suck up the time and energy of volunteers. Be kind, by all means(!) but don't be an idiot either.
At the same time I give at least something to everyone that appears to need it. Why? I think it's better to give a little something to someone who might not really need it than ignore someone who really does.

In 1989 I researched, wrote and published a 14-part series of newspaper articles on preventing child abuse. Laws in the State of Wisconsin were changed following that. In 1993 I published a four-part series of articles in the Malaysian New Straits Times newspaper on preventing Child Abuse.) 1997- 2001 American Red Cross, Disaster Action Team & Logistics team 2005– 2009 Nonsan, South Korea: Volunteer English teaching at orphanage and a community center for disadvantaged youth. I've got a book with about 30-40 certificates and letters of thanks from different organizations and even the state government. These are just a few.
In the social services I also worked as a family thereapist with adjudicated delinquents and for Child Protective Services. But those were paid jobs. In the U.S. I always carried several copies of a small paper with lists of phone numbers for women's shelters. That was "flying solo" kind of work, but I never regreted giving referrals like that. I never pity the people I help; I pity the people who can help but don't. |
People have asked me about my family. I tell them the truth. I've got a big family, with almost 5 billion people. It's called the human family. We don't always get along, but we're in this world together so we better make the best of it!
